National Geographic MAPS: Tools for Adventure
National Geographic’s MAPS: Tools for Adventure will provide children and families with an exciting opportunity to immerse themselves in the thrilling world of maps! Dynamic exhibit elements, grouped by Land, Sea, Air and Space themes, invite families to become explorers, chart new territory and plan their own adventures. Never before have children and families been able to experience maps in such a comprehensive way. The exhibit will feature fascinating maps and artifacts to show the scope of mapmaking around the world and throughout time. The stories of famous explorers will be accompanied by interactive experiences that immerse visitors in the process of producing maps and planning adventures. Families will see how maps help us understand the world in spatial terms, a key component of geographic literacy. They will search the ocean floor for treasure, design a map of the stars and create maps for their own trips across land, sea and air. Maps are tools that help people make sense of the world, make decisions and solve problems — all components of how geography helps people respond to the present and plan for the future. National Geographic’s MAPS: Tools for Adventure will be developed for teachers and school groups, grades 3 through 5. Educational materials based on national geography standards will be provided to supplement and extend the museum visit. |
