Story Avenue:
African-American Voices That Teach Us All

Story Avenue: African-American Voices That Teach Us AllStory Avenue, located on Level 3 of The Children's Museum, is an interactive, educational, and intergenerational exhibit demonstrating that stories teach about life. Through the experiences in this gallery, visitors of all backgrounds are also given the opportunity to understand and appreciate the role of storytelling and oral traditions in the African American community.

The exhibit as a whole is designed as a neighborhood street with many different settings. At the entrance to the gallery, visitors can frequently listen to stories told by a storyteller, listen to music played by African American performers, or engage in activities related to the African American experience.

Inside the gallery, visitors can enter a House of Worship where a video discussing the art of storytelling is playing. There are also stories for visitors to hear in the Boogedy Boogedy Style Shop, the Story Bank, and Aunt Janice's car as she taxis children around the neighborhood. Inside and even outside the house, there are also stories for visitors to listen and relate to. Come join a family around a dining room table as they engage in conversation about life lessons, or listen to a grandmother tell a story to her family as they prepare for bedtime.

Story Avenue provides a context for the remarkable tales residents of the Indianapolis area have provided. Listening to these stories provides lessons about positive traits and behaviors no matter a visitor's background.
